The UAE is stepping into a more digital future with the upcoming rollout of the digital Emirates ID, aiming to simplify access to various government and private services. But many residents are now wondering — will visa processing fees be reduced as a result of this shift? The short answer is: not likely.
Digital IDs Bring Efficiency, Not Cost Cuts
The move to replace physical Emirates ID cards with a digital version is mainly about increasing efficiency and convenience. The digital Emirates ID will be accessible through government-approved apps like UAEPASS and ICP UAE. It uses advanced technologies like facial recognition and biometric verification to authenticate users.
Although this sounds like a major change, it does not mean visa costs will be lowered. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has not announced any fee reduction in relation to the digital transition. Past examples also suggest that costs are unlikely to change. For instance, when the UAE stopped stamping visas physically in passports and moved to an online visa stamping process, the fees remained the same.
What Residents Can Expect
For now, residents will continue to receive physical Emirates ID cards, but the government has plans to gradually phase them out. The digital version is already being accepted in many sectors, including:
- Healthcare
- Banking
- Hospitality
- Telecommunications
The ICP is also encouraging businesses and service providers to integrate the digital ID system into their operations, ensuring smooth and secure identification procedures.
Driven by Convenience and Security
The shift to a digital ID system was partly inspired by feedback from the Federal National Council (FNC). Many council members highlighted how residents were facing difficulties due to the reliance on physical ID cards for essential services.
In response, the UAE government is expanding the use of UAEPASS, which securely stores your digital Emirates ID and uses biometric authentication. This means residents no longer need to carry their physical ID with them at all times.
However, it’s important to note that this upgrade focuses on ease of access and digital security — not on reducing application or processing fees.
Physical IDs Still Available for Now
Despite the ongoing transition, physical Emirates ID cards have not been discontinued. They are still being issued and accepted across all platforms. The digital version is currently offered as an additional option, with a full transition expected to take place gradually over the next year or so.
What Is the Digital Emirates ID?
The digital Emirates ID is a secure electronic version of your physical ID card. It can be accessed through apps like UAEPASS and ICP UAE and is verified using your facial features or fingerprints. This enables residents to use government and private services without needing to present the physical card.
While the UAE’s push toward digital identity is a major step forward in technology and convenience, it does not automatically lead to reduced visa processing fees. The process may become faster and smoother, but residents should not expect a drop in overall costs — at least not for now. The focus remains on modernization, security, and ease of use.
